The Palm Springs Art Museum has a storied history that dates back to its founding in 1938. What began as a small desert museum has grown into a world-renowned institution that showcases a diverse range of art, architecture, and design. The permanent collection consists of more than 24,000 objects.[9] 12,000 objects include fine art, fine art photography, photographic archives, Native American art, Mesoamerican art and artifacts from other cultures. Coming in fall 2023, a brand-new restaurant will open at the art museum, led by celebrated local chef and restaurateur Gabriel Woo, who also helms nearby Bar Cecil. Each Thursday through Sunday afternoon, complimentary docent-guided “Highlights of the Collection” and Special-Exhibition tours are available, just check in at the admissions desk. The intimate 437-seat Annenberg Theater presents internationally known performers and concert artists in music, dance and theater. One of Williams’ most notable achievements is the design of the Architecture and Design Center itself. Originally known as Santa Fe Federal Savings and Loan, the building was completed in 1961.

One year later, in April 2005, the museum officially changed its name from Palm Springs Desert Museum to Palm Springs Art Museum to reflect its emphasis on the visual and performing arts. In April 2004, the Board of Trustees decided to shift the museum's focus from a multi-disciplinary museum to a world-class art museum with a vibrant theater program. Executive Director Frederick Sleight arrived on the scene in 1965 with a vision of making the museum "the prime cultural center of the desert." Alice Sleight founded the docent program that same year. Furthermore, the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center actively engages with various community organizations and hosts events that celebrate the diverse cultural fabric of the region. Tours that include to the the Frey House incur an additional fee of $25 per person. The Frey House tours are offered exclusively as an add-on to our standard tour, which features additional interiors. Visits to the Frey House require advance reservations with a minimum of 48 hours notice. As the official tour of the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center, we are given special consideration to view the house, however, please note that it is not always available. The museum building had originally been designed with the possibility of adding a third level.
